IndyCar: Series begins search for Walker’s replacement

News of
Derrick Walker's departure from the Verizon IndyCar Series
after next month's season finale won't come as a surprise to most within its paddock, but the timing of the decision has pushed series boss Mark Miles to start a search for the next President of Competition sooner than expected. The Scot tendered his resignation last Friday during a meeting with Miles, and with an owners' meeting scheduled tomorrow at Mid-Ohio, the series will seek input from its entrants.
"We aren't going to look for someone through a head hunter; we have a meeting tomorrow night and we're going to scrub the agenda to see what the owners think about options," Miles told RACER. "We'll discuss the attributes we're looking for in the person we'll eventually hire, and get all kinds of ideas back from our owners, as well. We'll be very clear in the philosophies we're looking for. We'll turn over every stone and it will be our highest priority."
MILLER: Walker and the poisoned chalice
After receiving mostly positive reviews since joining the series in 2013, Walker found himself under constant fire this year as the introduction of aero kits proved to be far more problematic than expected. Growing discord within the paddock also drove a wedge between Walker and those directly affected by the decisions made – or not made – by his competition department.
A fraught month of May saw Walker's continued presence with IndyCar come into question, and less than two months after the Indy 500, the series will begin the next search for someone to lead the field to 2016 and beyond.
Chip Ganassi Racing managing director Mike Hull has been rumored as a possible replacement for Walker since May, as well as former Honda Performance Development boss Robert Clarke.
