Townsend Bell Asks "What'Cha Got"

Season 2 of “What’Cha Got” presented by Continental Tire, which debuts during halftime of tonight’s Major League Soccer (MLS) All-Star Game on FOX Sports 1 will be “Bigger and better in every which way,” said TUDOR United SportsCar Championship  driver and the show’s host, Townsend Bell.

The short format feature competition show takes MLS players from the pitch to the track, bringing out the competitive edge in some of soccer’s top players. “We’ve got 14 competitors this season, which is pretty awesome,” Bell explains. “Ten active MLS players, three MLS legends, and one FOX Sports media darling with Julie Stewart-Binks all competing for the chance to win a Lamborghini Huracan, which is the latest and greatest.”Tonight’s first episode of the second season kicks off in Denver from MLS All-Star Game, featuring Gyasi Zardes, the star forward from the LA Galaxy. Beginning August 9, “What’Cha Got,” will run every Sunday night following the FOX Soccer Sunday game of the week on FOX Sports 1, featuring a different competitor behind the wheel each week. To ensure a level playing field, every competitor is given the same opportunities: highly concentrated, high-performance driving lessons, a bit of practice and coaching, and the same car on the same track. “Then we kind of turn them loose and see what they got,” said Bell.“It’s going to be exciting. There’s some pretty damn good talent behind the wheel and similar to last year, they are broken into the Eastern and Western Conference, and at the end we match up the fastest in the East with the fastest in the West.“You know one thing about professional soccer players that I think really translates well to driving is that they’ve got terrific finite motor skills with their feet, and as you know, that factors heavily into learning to balance a super car at its limits. So that’s something they do very well right out of the gate.” Chicago Fire goalie and season 1 winner, Sean Johnson, demonstrated his quick reflexes, speed and dedication to capture the grand prize, turning into a “car fanatic” in the process. “He’s done some autocross on his own now, he’s done a racing school at Skip Barber and that’s all on his own initiative. He’s just fallen in love with driving fast,” said Bell of Johnson. “One thing that we’ve discovered is if you give them (the competitors) a taste, most of them leave big sports car and racing enthusiasts.”And what does Bell get out of all of this? “My greatest satisfaction comes from the pure joy of the players getting to do something competitive that they probably wouldn’t otherwise ever get a chance to do because they are so busy in their soccer lives. So that’s a lot of fun.”
