Rowland gets Silverstone GP2 debut

Formula Renault 3.5 championship leader Oliver Rowland will make his GP2 debut at his home round at Silverstone this weekend with MP Motorsport. He Sergio Canamasas in the one-off deal for the British Grand Prix support event.

Canamasas did not race for the team in the previous round at the Red Bull Ring, where MP fielded just a single car for Daniel de Jong.

Racing Steps Foundation protege Rowland competed for the team's Manor MP Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup team in 2013, finishing second between Pierre Gasly and Esteban Ocon in the championship.

"It's a fantastic opportunity for me to race in front of my home crowd," said Rowland. "I can't thank MP Motorsport and the RSF enough for setting this up for me.

"I raced with the team in the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup championship in 2013 and built up a really strong relationship with them. Regrettably after all the hard work we put in, we missed out on the title that year by 16 points So it would be good if I could repay them and the RSF for the belief that they continue to show in me with a strong result this weekend."

The Silverstone event will be Rowland's first experience of a GP2 car. He currently leads the FR3.5 standings by 16 points over Matthieu Vaxiviere.

Meanwhile, fellow Brit Jon Lancaster will return to GP2 at Silverstone with Hilmer Motorsport, partnering Nick Yelloly.
