Burton Racing Watkins Glen Pre-Race Report
After an eight week break in race action, Burton Racing is ready to make the most of the team’s return to IMSA Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge racing at Watkins Glen International this weekend.
Drivers Terry Borcheller and Mike LaMarra will share the No. 23 BMW Automotive Chemicals/Excelda/Gold Eagle BMW 128i in the Continental Tire 150 At The Glen which marks Round 4 of the 10-race championship season.
It’s been two months since the previous round at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in early May. With that pause in action now behind the team, Watkins Glen will mark the first race of a much busier section of the IMSA schedule, with five events slated for the next eight weeks.
Following an encouraging recent test that has the group finding more confidence with the well-balanced BMW 128i, Burton Racing hopes the Watkins Glen weekend will serve as a strong launching point for this critical stretch of races in the championship fight.
The 3.4 mile, 11-turn track has history in spades. Watkins Glen has played host to sports cars, IndyCar, Formula 1, and NASCAR since the opening of the permanent track in the village of Watkins Glen in 1956. Every win is cherished, but victory at a track like Watkins Glen is extra motivating.
Borcheller brings a wealth of experience at Watkins Glen with a total of five victories there in his storied sports car racing career. Burton Racing has yet to reach victory lane at the historic facility but hopes to capitalize this weekend and convert the positive momentum from their recent test into a podium performance.
“The racing luck unfortunately just hasn’t been on our side in the past two races, but we’re hoping that the Glen will be a turning point for us” said Team Owner Keith Burton. “We don’t let these rare bad luck race weekends get us down. The guys at Burton Racing just keep their heads up and keep working to improve. And that motivation showed when we were testing during the break. We feel pretty confident heading into the Glen. This is a track that our drivers love and of course Terry (Borcheller) has seen a lot of success there. We’re well-prepared and if the luck falls our way, we’ll have the opportunity to shine.”
