New VW Beetle joins World RX field
Experienced Swedish rallycross team Eklund Motorsport will debut a new Volkswagen Beetle at Sweden's round of the World Rallycross Championship at Holjes in July.
The Beetle was added to the FIA's list of cars that are approved for rallycross, but not homologated, in January. Norwegian Daniel Holten will drive the Beetle on its first outing.
Team principal and 1999 European rallycross champion Per Eklund said: "We are confident that this car is a brilliant base for a Supercar, the dimensions of it are really, really good. We are more motivated than ever and will push hard to continue the development, together with Daniel. It's great to be working with a driver like Daniel, who has already proven his potential."
Holten has made sporadic appearances in Supercar in recent years and shown good pace.
"To get to drive a car for Eklund Motorsport with Per Eklund as coach is huge for me," he said. "The result of what happens at Holjes will decide how this develops further; perhaps we will also race at the Norwegian World RX round at Lanke in August."
Eklund's new car is different to those of Andretti Motorsport, which runs a pair of Beetles in the Red Bull Global Rallycross Championship for former Scott Speed and Tanner Foust.
