F1: Ricciardo "banging head against a wall"

Daniel Ricciardo was left highly frustrated after finishing a lap down in the Canadian Grand Prix, scene of his first Formula 1 win in 2014.

A day after describing his qualifying performance with choice words, Ricciardo's race was equally as pitiful as the Australian finished a miserable 13th in his Red Bull. Teammate Daniil Kvyat finished ninth, leaving Ricciardo convinced something was wrong with his car.

"That was one of those races where I was going round and round, banging my head against a wall," Ricciardo told AUTOSPORT. "I made a few jokes yesterday thinking today would be better, and I didn't think in my wildest dreams today would end up how it did.

"It was like two years ago, to be honest; it was really strange. I had my worst race here in 2013 when I was 15th.

"Jean-Eric Vergne [his then teammate at Toro Rosso] was so much quicker than me on the Sunday and we didn't really have any answers. A year later I win, and now I am back where I was in 2013.

"For now I'm smiling because I'm sure something was fundamentally up with the car today. I know I am not a second slower than Daniil and I know I haven't forgotten how to drive.

"The unfortunate thing is it made the afternoon pretty frustrating. Hopefully it's something obvious, but we may have to dig a little deeper."

Asked about his feeling with the car, Ricciardo said: "There was nothing that made me feel like 'this is an absolute box.' I had more downforce than Daniil. We switched [to running more wing] in quali, something I wanted to do. I was sliding around more and using the tires more in the race, but it just didn't work.

"I know it's got nothing to do with my capabilities, but it was disappointing to be lapped by the Williams."

When it was suggested to Ricciardo his chassis could be cracked, he replied: "I know I'm going to get a new one anyway. It was the plan to get the second one in for Austria, so maybe that will put a few people's minds at rest.

"I didn't have any hits with the barriers or anything like that this weekend. There is nothing I can think of which stands out. So it's a case of tucking into the laptops and try to find something."
