Sabine takes first-ever points for a woman in the WTCC

Sabine Schmitz, competing with the support of the FIA Women in Motorsport Commission, made history at the weekend by becoming the first woman to score points in a modern era FIA World Touring Car Championship event. The German - making her debut in the series at the Race of Germany - claimed 10th and one point in the first race at the notoriously tricky Nürburgring Nordschleife circuit and finished 11th in her Chevrolet RML Cruze TC1 in the second race.

“There are not many sports where men and women compete together,” said Sabine, referring to the support of the Commission and its causes. “It’s more or less motorsport and some horse-riding. You need someone to look at who does it. I think I wasn’t too bad driving against all the professionals, the world champions and the Formula One drivers.”

Michèle Mouton, President of the FA Women in Motorsport Commission, added: “It was never going to be easy to jump into the car and challenge the world’s best, but Sabine has done a great job and to score points in her debut WTCC event demonstrates she has that ability.”
