Indy 500: Rain cancels Saturday action, revised Sunday schedule set
Only two drivers posted speeds before the skies opened up Saturday at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway so now qualifying becomes a one-day show.
Ryan Hunter-Reay and Carlos Huertas completed their runs and Scott Dixon got one lap in before it began raining and ever stopped – with activity being canceled shortly after 2 p.m.
Sunday's schedule will open with practice for all 34 cars at 8 a.m. before qualifying starts at 10 a.m. All cars will be given one attempt in the original qualifying order. Positions 10-30 will be determined and the fastest nine drivers will face off for the pole position beginning at 1:45 p.m.
Time permitting, positions 31-33 will be decided starting at 3 p.m.
ACTION AS IT HAPPENED
10:04 ET: Following morning rains, the track finally opened for practice in overcast, cooler conditions than Friday when speeds never climbed above 230mph.
10:06 ET: It only took Will Power three laps to hit 231.323mph in the Verizon Dallara-Chevrolet – top speed of the month and right at Ed Carpenter's pole speed of a year ago. Carpenter immediately ran 230 mph in three laps in his Fuzzy's Vodka Chevy.
10:08: Takuma Sato, in the ABC Dallara-Honda, reached 230mph in four laps, as did Tony Kanaan in the NTT Data Chevy of Chip Ganassi.
10:18: J.R. Hildebrand reached almost 233mph with a lap of 232.985 in the third CFH Chevrolet. Scott Dixon joined the fun at 231.640 mph in the Target Chevy, just as Power clicked off a 231.907. Hildebrand ran 232 with no tow and Power 231 with no assistance.
10:35 ET: Helio Castroneves jumped to the top with a lap of 233.474mph in the Shell Chevy and teammate Juan Montoya jumped up to 231.731.
10:50 ET: Rain brings an early halt to practice – and radar doesn't look promising for the next couple hours.
11:25 ET: We are green after almost one hour's worth of a rain delay. The second practice group ahead of Indy 500 qualifying will conclude their session at 11:37 p.m.

12:00 ET: After an opening lap of 231-plus, Scott Dixon was waved in when it began raining.
12:45 ET: A heavy rainstorm engulfs IMS and more bad weather is moving in.
