IndyCar: Speed pushing for test with Andretti
Ex-F1 driver Scott Speed says that he would be interested in expanding his role with Andretti Autosport to include an IndyCar road course appearance if the opportunity ever presents itself.
The 32-year-old, who made 28 Formula 1 starts with Toro Rosso in 2006 and '07, is a full-time member of Andretti's Red Bull Global Rallycross lineup, and also earned a podium when he suited up for Andretti's Formula E team in Miami.
Speed's IndyCar experience to date is limited to an unsuccessful attempt to qualify for the Indianapolis 500 with Dragon Racing in 2011 and, following Dan Wheldon's fatal accident at Las Vegas later that year, he ruled himself out of ever racing an IndyCar on an oval. However, he says that the prospect of racing an IndyCar for Andretti on a road course holds strong appeal.
"Yeah, it's been talked about," Speed told AUTOSPORT. "It always comes down to the right opportunity.
"I'm not going to do it just to do it, but it's something I would like to do, and I think it's something they would like to do, and if an opportunity comes up where we do some road racing, I'd be all for it.
"The drawback is that I know that I'm not going to run on an oval, so... how much effort do you really want to put in just to do a one-off race?"
Speed says that IndyCar's testing rules, which grant teams two additional test days for rookie drivers, could provide a loophole to allow him to sample an IndyCar without the additional complications of preparing for a racing program.
"Honestly, what I am more pushing them for is to let me do test driving for them, because I'm an [IndyCar] rookie so I think they can get an extra couple of days of testing," he said.
"Technically I've never raced an IndyCar. So every time I go into the office I go, 'OK guys, I'm ready to go testing.' I think it would be so much fun to drive one of those things."
Speed finished third in last year's GRC standings, picking up three wins along the way. The 2015 season opens in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., at the end of this month.
