IndyCar: Castroneves to the fore in third Indy GP practice

Father Time has yet to slow Team Penske's Helio Castroneves, who will make his 300th Indy car start this weekend during the Angie's List Grand Prix of Indy. The Brazilian paced the final session before this afternoon's run for the pole during the Firestone Fast 6, posting a lap of 1:10.375 to lead a Chevy 1-7 in the session.

Target Chip Ganassi Racing's Scott Dixon held the top spot for most of the session but, as drivers went out late in the 45-minute practice to evaluate their qualifying setups, KVSH Racing's Sebastien Bourdais (1:10.401), Team Penske's Simon Pagenaud (1:10.477), and his teammate Will Power (1:10.503) moved ahead of Dixon's 1:10.523.

The best Honda runner was Graham Rahal, who once again chased home the leading Chevys with a manufacturer-best 1:11.040 – a full 0.664 seconds behind Castroneves.

Eight of the top-10 times belonged to drivers from Penske or Ganassi, while eight of the 10 slowest laps went to Honda drivers. Andretti Autosport, in particular, had a frustrating FP3 as its four-car squad finished the outing with its drivers P17, P20, P21, and P22.

Up next is qualifying at 3 p.m. ET.
