F3: Beer sidelined with broken vertebra

Formula 3 European Championship driver Nicolas Beer has been ruled out of the remainder of this weekend's Hockenheim event due to fracturing his fifth vertebra in Friday's opening race.

The Dane was hit by Tatiana Calderon when the Colombian missed her braking into Turn 2, with Beer's EuroInternational team telling AUTOSPORT that the impact was 20g.

Beer stayed in hospital under observation on Friday night and has been declared unfit to race, with a further observation required before the next round in Pau in two weeks' time.

EuroInternational has repaired Beer's Dallara-Mercedes, which would be ready to race if the driver was uninjured.

It is a further blow not only for Beer, who was hospitalized with concussion after an Imola testing crash in March, but for EuroInternational , as the Italian team's deal with Marvin Kirchhofer for its other car fell through at the last minute.

"It's a nightmare," said team boss Antonio Ferrari. "We are like a magnet for bad luck."
