CJ Wilson Racing Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca Pre-Race Report
In 2014 the drivers of the #5 CJ Wilson Racing ModSpace Motorsports Mazda MX-5 left Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca with their second podium of the young season and the nagging feeling of ‘what might have been’. Twelve months on Stevan McAleer and Chad McCumbee once more head to Mazda’s home track with their sights firmly set on victory lane.
Sebring proved to be an eventful and exciting affair as McAleer had to nurse the ModSpace Motorsports car home with an ever lengthening brake pedal all while battling David Murray’s BMW for the second spot on the podium. While Sebring International Raceway and Mazda Raceway are both “Mazda” tracks, the eleven turns and two and a quarter miles of Mazda Raceway should be easier on brakes and give the team a genuine shot at its first win in almost two seasons. The thirty year old Scot is bullish about his team’s prospects in Northern California. “I am really excited to get back to Mazda Raceway this year with CJ Wilson Racing. I wasn't happy with how the race finished last year even though we got our ModSpace Mazda on the podium with a great fight to the end. I really feel we can win this race so we are setting our sights high and I won't be happy with anything less than a podium.” McAleer went on to reiterate his and the team’s desire for victory. “We are due another win in the Continental Tire Series ST class and I am hungry for this one in particular at Mazda Raceway. We will have a fast car and the twisty and narrow layout suits our MX-5 so we absolutely have to shoot for P1."William Mann, Vice President of Motorsports for ModSpace, is keenly anticipating Round 3 of the Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge, “we are very proud and excited to see our Mazda's race under their namesake at Mazda Raceway. We take great pride in this race and our relationship with Mazda. John Doonan, Director of Motorsports for Mazda North America, has helped so many in this sport and represents the Mazda brand in the highest degree.” He went on to say, “we are proud to be part of the Mazda Motorsports family and know that Chad and Stevan will represent both Mazda and ModSpace at the highest level. A podium finish is definitely within their grasp!”The third round of the Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge takes place at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca on Saturday, May 2nd at 4pm EST.
