RACER: Robin Miller at the Bobby Unser RRDC dinner
The annual Road Racing Drivers Club dinner at Long Beach honored Bobby Unser last week and the three-time Indy 500 winner honored his friends and racers with some hilarious stories from his checkered career.
Host Bobby Rahal only had to ask one question about going from the Italian Grand Prix to the Hoosier Hundred back to Italy to get Uncle Bobby off and running. Brother Al, Parnelli Jones and Dan Gurney were in attendance to make sure the king of Pikes Peak didn't embellish more than usual and Dario Franchitti learned that riding in a rental car with either Unser brother was scarier than Turn 1 at Indianapolis.
Safety guru Bill Simpson weighed in on Unser's ability to dodge dinner checks while IndyCar competition chief Derrick Walker passed along some compliments about his former driver at Team Penske.
"That was really nice," said Unser afterward. "I had a great time."
As did the rest of us.
