30 years ago today: Ayrton Senna's first F1 win

April 21 marks the 30th anniversary of Ayrton Senna's epic first Formula 1 victory in the 1985 Portuguese Grand Prix, run in heavy rain at Estoril.

Senna's wet-weather prowess had already made a strong impression on the F1 scene during his rookie season with Toleman in 1984, but after switching to Lotus for '85, Senna showed everyone just how otherworldly his skills were by taking pole position and leading from start to finish at Estoril in his Renault-powered Lotus 97T. Three world championships and 40 more grand prix wins would follow before the great Brazilian's untimely death in the San Marino GP in 1994.

RACER contributing artist Ricardo Santos has created the spectacular image shown above commemorating the event.
