New season finale set for Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge USA by Yokohama
The date of the final event of the 2015 Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge USA by Yokohama championship is moving to Sept. 25-27 due to a schedule change for the Porsche Rennsport Reunion V at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.
Porsche Rennsport Reunion V was moved to the new date, two weeks earlier than originally scheduled, because of an unforeseen scheduling conflict with the World Endurance Championship that would have prevented Porsche’s 919 Hybrid LMP 1 and 911 RSR race teams from attending the prestigious event in Northern California.
The final two rounds of the 16-round Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge USA by Yokohama will take place during Porsche Rennsport Reunion V on the 11-turn, 2.238-mile circuit at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, which includes the famous “The Corkscrew” turn complex.
"For over 60 years, motorsports has been an integral part of Porsche DNA,” said Jens Walther, president and CEO, Porsche Motorsport North America. “Therefore, it seems only appropriate that we have the pinnacle of the Porsche one-make series in North America compete on the weekend of the largest Porsche gathering in the world. We simply could not plan a better stage on which to crown the 2015 Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge USA by Yokohama champions. This will be a spectacular event for not only the teams taking part in the championship finale, but for all of the vintage racers and attendees of Rennsport Reunion V, as well."
More than 2,000 Porsche vintage, current race and street cars are expected to gather on the Monterey Peninsula to celebrate the manufacturer in a high-profile event that last took place in 2011.
Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge USA by Yokohama will be one of the featured classes of competition at the Porsche Cars North America event, which draws tens of thousands of spectators and also features a Concours d’Elegance, six classes of vintage racing, daily autograph sessions with legendary drivers and other special activities.
“The race for the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge USA by Yokohama Platinum Cup championship came down to the final event of the season among four talented drivers in 2014, and we expect similar excitement this season at Rennsport,” said Randy Hembrey, senior series manager, Development and Single-Make Series for the International Motor Sports Association (IMSA). “We can’t wait for the Rennsport weekend. It will be one of the highlights of our season and a cornerstone event for the series.”
The 2015 season starts March 18-20 at Sebring International Raceway in Sebring, Florida, as part of the prestigious Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring Fueled by Fresh From Florida race week.
