Ex-Formula 1 ace Rubens Barrichello sent the Starworks Motorsport Riley to the top of the time sheets in the final Roar Before the 24 session at Daytona.
On a wet but rapidly drying track, the Brazilian star saved his best until the very last moment, to clock a 1min47.230sec – some 4.5sec quicker than his nearest pursuer, the Spirit of Daytona Racing Corvette DP, piloted by Richard Westbrook. The Ligiers of Krohn Racing and Michael Shank Racing filled out P3 and P4.
In a session where only 10 cars hit the track, GT Daytona cars had the chance to rise to unusual prominence, and Markus Palttala did a typically solid job to put the late-arriving Turner Motorsports BMW Z4 fifth overall and top of the class with a 1min55.560sec lap.
That was enough to put him 1.1sec ahead of the sole GTLM car to hit the track, the Aston Martin V8 Vantage of Pedro Lamy.
