Fittipaldi gets FIA Academy place

By

Two-time Formula 1 world champion Emerson Fittipaldi’s grandson Pietro has been selected as part of the FIA Institute’s 2015 list of ‘Academy’ drivers.

The 18-year-old Brazilian, who won the Formula Renault BARC series in the UK this season, is one of 12 drivers selected to take part in the academy’s workshops, which are built around a fully-funded training programme.

Fittipaldi is one of six ‘Wildcard’ picks in the 2015 lineup, along with McLaren AUTOSPORT BRDC Award finalist Seb Morris, who is testing for Status in GP3 this week at Yas Marina. The remaining six drivers, including last year’s British F3 champion Jordan King, earned their places through winning regional selection events.

Former World Rally Championship winning co-driver Robert Reid, who works alongside ex-F1 racer Alex Wurz to lead the scheme, said: “I’m really looking forward to working with the latest intake of drivers to help develop their careers.

“This first workshop in Edinburgh [November 29-December 2] is about covering some of the principles that we will use throughout the academy year and gives the drivers an awareness of the level that they are currently working at.

The first workshop will focus on sport science, fitness training and education.
