WEC: Emerson Fittipaldi to make racing comeback at Interlagos

Two-time Formula 1 world champion and Indy 500 winner Emerson Fittipaldi will make a return to racing at the age of 67, at his home round of the World Endurance Championship at Interlagos.

The Brazilian is coming out of retirement to help boost the profile of the race that he promotes and will drive an AF Corse Ferrari 458 Italia (ABOVE in the six-hour race on Nov. 30.

Fittipaldi, who will be racing a Ferrari for the first time in his career, will share the GTE Am entry with Alessandro Pierguidi and Jeff Segal after Belarusian Alexander Talkanitsa Sr. stepped down to make way for the racing legend.

Team boss Amato Ferrari, who confirmed that the entry for Fittipaldi was made yesterday, said: "Emerson was a hero of mine when I was young, so it is a pleasure to have him in one of my cars. There will be no chance for him to test the car, but I feel he is very motivated and can do a good job."

The deal with AF Corse follows two failed attempts by Fittipaldi to put together a deal to race at Interlagos; potential deals to drive an OAK Racing Morgan-Judd/BMW LMP2 and an additional Aston Martin Vantage GTE with an all-Brazilian line-up including Bruno Senna foundered for financial reasons.

Fittipaldi, who tested an OAK Morgan at Interlagos in 2013, last raced during a Brazilian GT Championship campaign at the wheel of a Porsche 911 GT3 Cup in 2008.
