Wallace/Smith claim Classic 24 overall win
Some 130 classic and modern racecars took part in this past weekend's Classic 24 of Daytona, and while vintage racers naturally grabbed much of the spotlight, more modern equipment in Group E class set the overall pace.
Six groups of cars took one-hour shifts on the track, and statistics from all sessions were added together to determine the group winners. The winner of Group E and overall winning car was the 2005 Audi R8 prototype (ABOVE) driven by Andy Wallace and Doug Smith, which logged 88 laps over the Speedway's 3.56-mile road course. Wallace and Smith bested Enzo Potolicchio in his 2012 Coyote Corvette. Potolicchio also completed 88 laps, but finished 34.48 seconds behind Audi.
"You can't win anything like this without a good car and the car was beautifully prepared," said veteran sports car racer Wallace, a three-time winner of the 24 Hours of Daytona. "We lost ground on the straightaways but as soon as we got to the infield, the Audi hooked up so well. It was fantastic to drive."
Marc Devis and Christien Traber won Group A
, featuring prototypes from the 1960s. The pair completed 76 laps in a 1965 Lola T70 Mk1.{igallery id=3719|cid=239|pid=5|type=category|children=0|addlinks=0|tags=|limit=0}
