Keen Already Running Laps at Daytona Preparing for 2015
Leh Keen is finding it difficult to stay away from the racetrack.
Even though he isn’t officially confirmed as the driver of Alex Job Racing’s No. 22 WeatherTech Porsche 911 GT America for the 2015 TUDOR United SportsCar Championship season, Keen is already busy turning laps at Daytona International Speedway.Last week, Keen tested the No. 22 Porsche he co-drove with Cooper MacNeil in the 2014 TUDOR Championship, finishing third in the GT Daytona (GTD) championship. This weekend, he will join MacNeil in Alex Job Racing’s No. 23 Porsche 911 Carrera RSR that won the GT class in the 1999 Classic 24 Hour Historic Sportscar Racing (HSR) event.
How are you enjoying the off season?“Is it really an off season? It’s only a couple weeks after Petit (Le Mans powered by Mazda). I got to do Halloween, and now I’m already back at the race track getting ready for next year.”What do you have planned between now and Daytona?“We always go skiing out West. Living in Atlanta, we don’t get snow too often, so we have to go to it. I hope to do some relaxing, along with a lot of family time at Thanksgiving and Christmas. In between all the festivities, I’ll also be exercising, and keeping up with the car and racing world. Also, after I popped the question right before Petit, the off season will be a good to spend time with my fiancé.”What was your personal highlight of 2014?“I was real happy that we were the best finishing Porsche and we got on the podium for the (GTD) championship. That was a good accomplishment. We had a great podium at WeatherTech’s home race, when we finished second at Road America. My pole at the Watkins Glen Sahlen’s Six Hours was probably my biggest personal highlight.”What about the Rolex 24 and the 2015 season?“I’m excited. This year for us was with a new [Porsche 911] 991 chassis, so we’ve now had a year with it, and we know a lot more about it. Alex (Job) did a great job with our cars – they were one of the best, fastest Porsches all year, for sure – and I think we will be even better next year. I’m really looking forward to hitting the ground running, and hopefully go for a win in the Rolex 24.”Are you excited about the Classic 24 Hour coming up this weekend?“Yes, I’m excited about doing the HSR event. Alex won Daytona and Sebring in 1999 with a (Porsche 911) 993 RSR, so Cooper (MacNeil) and I will run that car in the new Daytona historic 24-hour race. Cooper’s dad (David MacNeil) and his friend (Pat Womack) will be running that year’s team car. Alex has had them both freshly rebuilt, now 15 years later it’s pretty cool to be racing those cars at Daytona again. I’ve been fortunate to co-drive in some endurance events overseas with Cooper this year in much older RSRs. I love that stuff. It doesn’t matter if it’s a 1974 RSR, a 1999 RSR or a 2015 Porsche 911 GT America, I don’t care – I love it all.”
