F1: Toto Wolff admits double-points finale could mar the season

Mercedes motorsport boss Toto Wolff is worried that his team's Formula 1 success could be overshadowed by double points in the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix season finale.

The battle between Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg for the drivers' crown will go to the last race at Yas Marina thanks to the race offering 50 points for the win. And, with a current 24-point gap between the two drivers, there is the prospect of Hamilton taking his 11th victory of the campaign in Brazil this weekend but still losing out in the championship.

Wolff said that the situation was not ideal, and he was mindful of the fact that a dominant campaign could end with unnecessary controversy.

"I don't have a fear, but I think the last race with the double points has the potential to overshadow the season," said Wolff, when asked by AUTOSPORT if he was worried about the situation. "We know why the double points came, and it made sense in the world to make it spectacular for the audience, the fans and the viewers.

"But now we are in a situation where it could change the outcome."

Hamilton has vowed not to let the potential ramifications of the situation worry him.

"It is just something that you can't be thinking about," he said. "It is a fact that it is a possibility, but it is not something I am ready to accept so I will be pushing as hard as I can to try to win the next races. I want to get as many points as I can.

"It's not something I can be thinking of – 'What happens if this happens in the future?' If we lived our life with 'what if', then you will perhaps not achieve what you set out to achieve."

"It is what it is," he said. "I don't really care, as long as I have one point more at the checkered flag in Abu Dhabi. I don't care why or how. It is the same for everybody."
