Daytona cancels Daytona 200 bike race for 2015

The recent takeover of AMA road racing by the new KRAVE group that includes motorcycling legend Wayne Rainey has had one prominent casualty, as Daytona International Speedway announced that it was canceling the Daytona 200 for 2015.

"After having multiple discussions with Moto America/KRAVE regarding a sanction agreement for 2015 Daytona 200, we were unable to find common ground on a business model that would be beneficial for both parties," said DIS President Joie Chitwood. "We wish MotoAmerica/KRAVE the best as they begin their inaugural season in 2015..

Chitwood made clear that other elements of the track's traditional "Bike Week" would continue unchanged.

"Daytona International Speedway will continue to be the driving force behind Bike Week, hosting a wide range of activities for all ages including the Daytona Supercross, the Ricky Carmichael Amateur Supercross and the AMA Pro Flat Track double-header, as well as demo rides, displays and vendors."

He added that the Daytona 200, which has been run at the speedway since 1961, could return in future years. "We will continue to look for partners to assist in running the Daytona 200," he said.

The Daytona 200 has been run at DIS since 1961.
