GP3: Stoneman denies Lynn in race two
Dean Stoneman won the race of the year in GP3 at Monza on Sunday morning to score his third victory of the season ahead of points leader Alex Lynn.
Manor driver Stoneman made a great start from P4 on the grid to swoop into the lead by the first chicane, as Carlin's Lynn jumped up from third to second while the front row of Matheo Tuscher and Patrick Kujala both made poor getaways from the front row. They would later collide at the Roggia, putting both out of the race.
Lynn was right on Stoneman's tail at the end of lap two, and, after shadowing him for a couple of laps, passed him for the lead on the start/finish straight at the start of lap four. But Stoneman repassed his fellow Briton at the Roggia chicane moments later, and Lynn was further demoted to third by Carlin teammate Emil Bernstorff at Lesmo 1. Lynn quickly repassed Bernstorff around the outside of the Parabolica, and closed right up to Stoneman again.
Meanwhile, Bernstorff slipped back into the clutches of ART's Marvin Kirchhofer, who grabbed third when Bernstorff ran wide at Lesmo 2 on lap 10.
Lynn stayed right with Stoneman until the last couple of laps, but when title rival Richie Stanaway retired with a technical failure at Roggia with a few laps remaining, he backed off to finish a safe second to extend his title advantage.
Lynn, who is 50 points clear at the head of the standings, can now wrap up the title at Sochi next time out.
Yesterday's race winner Jimmy Eriksson made a bad start, and was mired in 12th for most of the event. He rallied at the end, taking advantage of some late-race retirements and off-track moments from others to grab a solitary point for eighth.
Nick Yelloly finished fifth, behind Bernstorff and ahead of Kevin Ceccon and Luis Sa Silva.
