SVRA historic racing returns to Watkins Glen this week
SVRA vintage racing returns to action Sept. 3-7 with the Glenora Wine Cellars U.S. Vintage Grand Prix at Watkins Glen International.
The U.S. Vintage Grand Prix is the largest and most popular event of SVRA’s East Coast schedule, routinely drawing close to 400 entrants from the United States, Canada, England, and Australia. The Annual Grand Prix Festival held on Friday, in the village of Watkins Glen, commemorates the first Watkins Glen sports car races that took place in 1948, on the 6.6-mile street course that still exists today. The high point of the Festival is a reenactment of this landmark event with over 100 SVRA race cars driving the original course to the cheers of 20,000+ spectators.
The featured marque for the 2014 weekend will be MG, in commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the first Collier Brothers Memorial Trophy race for MGs held in 1953. It is expected that over 100 MGs from all over the world will take part in this year’s event. The weekend also features large fields and great competition in all of SVRA’s 11 race groups as well as the increasingly popular Pre War category, for racecars built prior to 1940.
The scenic Finger Lakes wine country, the quaint village of Watkins Glen, and beautiful fall weather provide a great end-of-summer weekend that shouldn’t be missed.
