Five AAR Eagle Indy cars to be auctioned in Monterey

Five All American Racers Eagle Indy cars will be offered for sale at two upcoming auctions in Monterey, including one of the 1972 cars that helped transform the sport and made Eagles the customer chassis to have.

1972 AAR Eagle, chassis 7219, was driven by Wally Dallenbach, Graham McRae Bill Simpson and George Follmer, among others, between 1972 and '78. Offered for sale by Mecum Auctions in 2012, the car failed to meet the reserve price. It will be offered this year by RM Auctions, which predicts a selling price between $350,000 and $400,000.

The second AAR Eagle to be offered by RM is a 1969 AAR Eagle Santa Ana, chassis 702, restored in the livery of the number 48 car driven by Dan Gurney to a second-place finish at the 1969 Indianapolis 500. Though not the actual car campaigned by Gurney at Indianapolis in 1969, chassis 702 (wearing number 7) was a backup car and was piloted by Gurney in shakedown testing at the Speedway.

A Chevrolet-powered 1981 Eagle, chassis 8104, will also be auctioned by RM. It was delivered new to retailing magnate and motorsports team owner John Menard, who campaigned it in the CART series. The car was first raced at Watkins Glen in 1981, where it was driven by Herm Johnson.

Meanwhile, Russo & Steele auctions will offer a pair of AAR Eagles, including chassis 7406, driven by Mario Andretti at the 1974 Indianapolis 500, and chassis 40-1, a 1968 Eagle delivered to team owner Lindsey Hopkins for driver Roger McCluskey in the 1968 Indy 500.
