Stanaway claims first GP3 pole

Richie Stanaway took pole position for Saturday's GP3 race at the Hungaroring, topping qualifying with a perfectly-timed lap at a circuit that is notoriously difficult to overtake around.

Status Grand Prix driver Stanaway set his 1m33.553s pole time with just over three minutes remaining, just seconds before a red flag as his teammate Alfonso Celis hit the barriers.

Stanaway, who claimed his first pole in the series, will start ahead of points leader Alex Lynn, who just missed out on the points for top spot by 0.035sec. Title rival Jimmy Eriksson found the going tougher, however, and could only qualify 12th, though will start 10th as two cars in front of him have grid penalties.

Nick Yelloly made it a Status one-three, one of the few drivers to improve after the red flag, demoting Arden's Robert Visoiu to fourth. ART's Dino Zamparelli, who had topped the session for its majority, slumped to fifth, but will start ahead of late improver Emil Bernstorff.

Alex Fontana will start eighth, but was on a pole-threatening lap when the red flags thwarted him.
