Camaro Z/28.R Racing with Momentum at Indianapolis

In just its first year of competition, the Chevrolet Camaro Z/28.R is making an immediate mark in the Continental Sports Car Challenge. With three wins in its debut season, Chevy Camaro teams in the Grand Sport (GS) class ride that momentum into one of the world’s iconic tracks – Indianapolis Motor Speedway for the eighth race of the Continental Tire championship season.

This marks the third appearance for the series at the Brickyard with the Camaro establishing a solid record. Eric Curran and Lawson Aschenbach won the inaugural event in a CKS Autosport Camaro GS.R. Five Camaros filled the top eight spots at the finish with Stevenson Motorsports’ Matt Bell setting the fastest race lap.

Curran, the pole-winner at Watkins Glen, and Aschenbach will be in one of four Camaro Z/28.Rs for Friday’s 2:35 p.m. race. Bell and Andy Lally won the most recent race at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park for Stevenson Motorsports in the No. 9 Camaro. Their teammates in the No. 6 car – Robin Liddell and Andrew Davis – won at Sebring and Watkins Glen. Ashley McCalmont and Mike Skeen gave CKS Autosport’s No. 00 Camaro Z/28.R its highest finish of the season in Canada with a seventh-place finish.

“Bringing the new Chevrolet Camaro Z/28.R to the Brickyard is a very important and special opportunity for everyone involved in this program,” said Lisa Talarico, Chevrolet Program Manager for the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge. “With consecutive GS victories, the Camaro Z/28.R has incredible momentum. Taking another win - this time at Indianapolis - would be a highlight of our first year. The Camaro platform has won at Indy before, so there is no reason to expect it will not be competitive this week.”

Developed alongside its production counterpart, the Chevrolet Camaro Z/28.R  incorporates the same performance elements that make the 2014 Camaro Z/28 the most track-capable Camaro ever. To enhance grip, for example, the Z/28.R’s body shares the same downforce-generating aero package as the production model including: the front splitter, rear spoiler with wickerbill, and hood extractor vent, among other items.

The Z/28.R is also powered by the same LS7 7.0L V-8 engine as the production Z/28 and employs the unique, helical-gear limited-slip rear differential found on the production model. It is standard in the Z/28, helping the driver put down more power to the pavement when exiting corners.
