IndyCar: Hinchcliffe, Honda lead rain-shortened Iowa FP1

Rain drops began to fall at the 14-minute mark of the Verizon IndyCar Series' first practice session on the Iowa oval. Six minutes later, officials canceled the 75-minute session as the weather worsened and concerns of lightning strikes – a common occurrence at the Midwest facility – forced teams and fans to seek shelter.

Prior to the rain, Andretti Autosport's James Hinchcliffe managed to turn 13 laps in his No. 27 Honda with a best of 183.647mph, followed by Target Chip Ganassi Racing's Tony Kanaan (183.562) and Andretti's Carlos Munoz (183.105) in third.

Bryan Herta Autosport's Jack Hawksworth, who suffered a chassis-destroying crash in practice at Pocono last weekend, returned to the cockpit and managed 16 laps with a best of 173.298.

Practice is expected to resume if and when the conditions improve. The next session on the schedule is qualifying, followed by night practice, although both could be scrapped if the local forecast is accurate.

"We have to sit and wait for a little while," said INDYCAR President of Competition Derrick Walker. "We'll get ready to go as soon as it dries out. If you look at the forecast, it looks like [the rain] will drive [the race] it into Sunday."
