Pirelli GT3 Cup Trophy USA Racing Series takes on Laguna Seca
Pirelli GT3 Cup drivers took on all the unique track challenges that Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca presents over the weekend of June 28-29. The annual Competent Motorsport Classic provided the drivers five hours of track time including two 40-minute races.
These two races represented races #6 and #7 of the 2014 Class Championships for the Silver (2000‐2005) 996 GT3 Cup, Gold (2006‐2009) 997 GT3 Cup, and Platinum (2010‐2013) 997 GT3 Cup , Porsche factory “as delivered” platforms.
The Platinum points leader after the first two events in 2014, Loren Beggs (#03) of 911 Design, was geared up to take on all challengers going after the 2014 Platinum Class Championship. In addition, the Silver class brought a trio of racers going after the class championship lead, which proved to be an exciting battle over the weekend.

The Silver Class had Dave Leyvas #24 (Race Technik) returning after a year away from series showing he had not
lost any of his speed on the track.
In Race #6 there was plenty of racing within the race as drivers took advantage of any miscues from other drivers to enhance their position. Kevin Woods led the pack going three deep into Turn 2 and stayed there as the other podium positions continued changing throughout the race with Lorenzo Trefethen #17 (Aasco Motorsports) securing second place and while Loren Beggs #03 maneuvered through the field to capture third place on the podium.
The Silver Class started without its top qualifier, Dave Leyvas #24, as his engine went away at the end of the Qualifying session. Mark Brouse #59 (Air Power Racing) with his first race of the 2014 season took the top podium spot with Darrell Troester #41 (JT Tatum Racing) finishing second by two seconds.
Qualifying on Sunday saw first time polesitter Jason Godfrey #13 (TFB) lead the field with a 1:29.62 qualifying lap; the top four were split by .02 seconds. While Dave Leyvas lead the Silver Class qualifiers with a 1:30.40.
When the checkered flag for Race 7 was waved, Robert Todd #52 (BRRacing) was on top of the podium, with Jason Godfrey #13 second and Lorenzo Trefethen #17 taking the third spot. In the Silver Class Dave Leyvas #24, the pole sitter, was victorious with Darrell Troester #41 coming in second while Mark Brouse #59 landed on the third step of the podium.
The Pirelli GT3 Cup Trophy USA racing series heads next to Road America on Aug. 1-3 for the fourth round of the 2014 season. Year to date championship standings are shown below. To view the remaining 2014 schedule and results, visit www.competentms.com and follow Competent Motorsport on Facebook.
