Formula E picks London location for UK race

Formula E has chosen London's Battersea Park as its preferred venue for the finale to its inaugural season.

London was one of the cities originally chosen from 23 applicants in 2013 to host a race the Battersey venue was confirmed as the "chosen location" for the June 27 race at the championship's launch event in London (pictured) on Monday evening.

Mayor of London Boris Johnson said the event "is set to provide an awesome addition to the capital's sporting calendar. Battersea, which is already booming with the buzz of regeneration, will be alive with the excitement that this new, world-class event will no doubt spark.

"Hosting the championship final of this all-electric race is a fantastic feather in our city's sporting cap. It shows that there is great confidence in London's ability to stage the biggest and the best global sporting events."

HURDLES TO OVERCOME

Other venues in London had been evaluated, including the Olympic Park, Hyde Park and a venue around Wembley Stadium. The Battersea Park event is not definite yet, with a spokesman for Wandsworth Borough Council confirming that a race had not been signed off.

"We need to look at it very carefully," said the spokesman, "and first of all to speak to amenity groups and local residents. We are not in a position to say yes or no at this stage."
