F1: Rosberg says second not good enough

Nico Rosberg thinks extending his Formula 1 championship lead in Canada was not good enough, because Mercedes should not have allowed anyone else to win in the first place.

The German car manufacturer's run of six consecutive victories came to an end in Montreal when it suffered an energy recovery system failure on both cars, forcing Lewis Hamilton out and hampering Rosberg's speed. Although Rosberg held on brilliantly to only lose one place to eventual winner Daniel Ricciardo, he reckons Mercedes should be far from happy, because the W05 is fast enough to finish 1-2 everywhere.

"It is really not good because our car is fast enough to win every race," explained Rosberg. "So to go away from Canada without a win is a big disappointment for us as a team, all of us, and we need to bounce back in Austria. At the moment we need to try to finish 1-2 in every race with the car we have."

Although Hamilton was forced out of the Montreal race with brake failure, as a consequence of the energy recovery system problems, Rosberg was able to coax his car to the finish and secure second place. The points he earned for that have given him a 22-point advantage over Hamilton in the drivers' standings, and could prove crucial in what appears to be a straight head-to-head title challenge. But Rosberg wants Mercedes to act on the lessons of Canada, and ensure that it suffers no repeat issues.

"In hindsight, it was massive damage limitation coming second. It was lots of points and it was a decent day. But for the team it sucks, because our ambition is to do much better," he said. "To have reliability problems like that is not good.

"We need to be bulletproof and it is a work in progress. It is the first problem I have had, because we have been good with reliability before, but we need to keep on going now and make sure it is 100 percent – which of course is never easy."
