IndyCar: Power to focus on halting pitlane penalties

Will Power says that he needs to address his propensity for pitlane speeding after incurring his fourth penalty in five IndyCar races at Texas last weekend.

The Penske driver was penalized following his final stop, but managed to stay on the lead lap and capitalized on a late strategy gamble to recover to second place. Problems for his closest championship rivals Helio Castroneves and Ryan Hunter-Reay meant that he still ended the weekend with a solid points lead, but the Australian concedes that he could not afford to keep squandering track position.

"I'm just going too hard," he admitted. "I just go for race wins and I'm not looking at points.

"I enjoy racing, and you do it for fun and try to get the most out of it, but those mistakes are just not good enough at this level. I've got to stop it. I've got to just take it a bit easier."

Power goes into the upcoming IndyCar double-header at Houston 39 points ahead of teammate Castroneves, and 60 points clear of 2012 champion Hunter-Reay.
