Indy 500: Andretti ups ante to 232mph in pre-qualifying practice

Marco Andretti busted a lap of 232.239mph during Saturday morning's practice to lead the onslaught of a dozen drivers over 230mph in preparation for the opening round of qualifying for the 98th Indianapolis 500.

Driving his dad's Snapple Dallara-Honda, Andretti was the only driver over 232 on a crisp, cool morning that was so cold (46 degrees) that practice started an hour later than scheduled. Firestone demands 100 degrees total, track and ambient temps, before it's deemed safe to run.

Defending champ Tony Kanaan posted a 231.598mph in the Target Dallara-Chevy, while Ryan-Hunter-Reay was also over 231mph in the DHL Dallara-Honda.

NASCAR star Kurt Busch continued to impress with a lap of 230.9 in another Andretti-prepared Dallara/Honda – just a tick quicker than Townsend Bell's 230.8 in the KV Racing Chevy.

Today's time trials will set the provisional field and the pole position will be determined Sunday.
