CJ Wilson Racing has further underlined its commitment to the development of young racing talent with the addition of teenager Devin Jones to its SCCA Pro Racing Mazda MX-5 Cup Presented by BFGoodrich Tires team.
The Mooresville, N.C.-based 19-year-old lives in the heart of stock car country but he cut his teeth in road racing on the IKF and WKA kart tracks of California. For the last seven years, Jones has been competing in a number of NASCAR-sanctioned series, including both late model and super late model touring programs, and he made his Camping World Truck Series debut at Martinsville Speedway last April. His love of road racing never left him and he is relishing the prospect of competing in such a competitive series in 2014.
“I’m extremely excited about the opportunity to drive for CJ Wilson Racing. In my short time with the team I’ve found it to be a perfect fit. Their experience, leadership and depth of knowledge is simply unmatched,” explained Jones. “The opportunities for me to tap into the experience of their veteran drivers will fuel the success of my transition from stock car to road course racing. In addition, the business opportunities for my sponsor VeriStor are exceptional with the support of this experienced team. I’m looking forward to a very successful 2014 season together.”
CJ Wilson Racing IMSA Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge driver Chad McCumbee is a NASCAR Sprint Cup veteran and knows how valuable Jones’ oval track experience will be.
“The type of racing that Devin has been competing in for the last few years will mean he should be very comfortable in traffic and with fast cars around him,” said McCumbee. “He will also be able to use a lot of what he has learned, on the short tracks, about carrying momentum and maximizing his corner exit speeds. Luckily for him, all that experience is recent and it will be a big help.”
His new team owner, CJ Wilson, is confident that Jones will quickly make an impact and improve the overall quality of the team. “Devin is new to the MX-5 Cup but he has been racing in other series for a number of years. So we really expect him to hit the ground running,” said Wilson.”Having multiple racers that are not only talented behind the wheel but also able to push and challenge each other is going to bring out the best in everyone.”
Jones’s initial foray into the ultra competitive world of the Mazda MX-5 Cup Championship begins on March 13 at Sebring International Raceway with race one of a double-header in support of the TUDOR United SportsCar Championship’s 12 Hours of Sebring. Race two will take place early on the morning of March 14.
