Rolex 24: Richard Westbrook leads final warm-up

By

After leading seemingly every session except the one that mattered on Thursday, Corvette Racing driver Richard Westbrook returned to the top of the charts during Friday practice for the Rolex 24 at Daytona.

Westbrook’s No. 90 entry had topped each of Thursday’s first two sessions but was bested in qualifications by Alex Gurney, who captured his second career Rolex 24 pole position in the No. 99 Corvette Racing DP.

Gurney finished the lone practice session of the day in second with a lap of 1:39.568 trailing only Westbrook at 1:39.256. Christian Fittipaldi came third at 1:39.665. All of the top three finishers in Saturday’s practice were piloting Corvette DPs.

Starworks Motorsport driver Sam Bird came out on top amongst the Prototype Challenge cars with a top lap of 1:42.17 and was followed on the chart by Alex Popow (1:43.08) and James Kovacic (1:44.19).

The Ferrari F458 of Matteo Malucelli posted the top lap time in GTLM at 1:47.007 in the No. 62 Risi Competizione entry. Malucelli was followed in class by Patrick Pilet (1:45.422) in a Porsche 911 RSR and Jan Magnussen (1:45.934) in a Corvette C7.R.

The hour-long session was nearly without incident aside from a Turn 5 spin from GTD driver Piergiuseppe Perazzini, who was able to continue without damage. There were a pair of red flags for cars stopped on track, but neither Enzo Potolicchio nor Duncan Endefirst sustained damage to their racecars.

In GTD Milo Valverde laid down a lap of 1:48.073 which put him atop the speed chart in his No. 556 entry. Christian Englehart was second in class in his No. 28 Porsche 911 GT America (1:48.233), followed by IndyCar veteran Townsend Bell (1:48.374) in a Ferrari F458 Italia.
