Takuma Sato is to join fellow ex-Formula 1 racer Lucas di Grassi as a development driver for the FIA’s new electric open-wheel series Formula E.
The announcement of Sato’s role was made as Formula E made its Asian debut in a launch event at the Tokyo Motor Show on Wednesday.
“I am very excited to be a part of the drivers program for the development of the Formula E cars,” Sato said. “This series provides huge potential for the future of motor racing and electric cars. I am very much looking forward to driving the test car this coming winter.”
Sato contested 90 grands prix between 2002 and ’08, and is now an IndyCar regular, taking his first victory on the streets of Long Beach earlier this year. His former F1 employer Super Aguri recently announced that it would contest Formula E, which commences in September 2014.
