Lucas Auer will make his sports car debut for the Lotus LMP2 squad in the World Endurance Championship’s Bahrain finale.

The 19-year-old raced has competed in a multitude of Formula 3 championships over the past two years, winning races in the German category in 2012, where he finished second overall, and this year in European F3, where he claimed two victories on his way to fourth in the championship.

The German-based Lotus/Kodewa team has run two Lotus-Praga T128 coupes in this year’s WEC. The team’s best result came at Circuit of The Americas in September, when Thomas Holzer, Dominik Kraihamer and Jan Charouz finished seventh overall and third in class.

“I am very pleased that I was given the chance to compete in the FIA World Endurance Championship season finale with the Lotus-Praga LMP2,” Auer said. “For me, an endurance race will be an entirely new experience since I only took part in sprint races so far. Driving a closed-top car is also unknown territory for me and so is having to share the car with teammates.

“Generally, I think it is a good thing for a racing driver to get new experiences. I am grateful for the chance that I am getting now. However, this doesn’t mean that I am bowing out of single-seater racing — it is my aim to race in the Formula 3 European Championship once again next year.”
