Ekstrom confirms return to RoC

Two-time DTM champion Mattias Ekstrom will return to the Race of Champions for this year’s Bangkok-based event.

The Swede is chasing a record-equaling fourth RoC title. His three titles came after defeating Sebastien Loeb in 2006 and Michael Schumacher in both ’07 and ’09.

Ekstrom will partner with nine-time Le Mans 24 Hours winner Tom Kristensen, with whom he clinched the 2005 RoC Nations Cup.

“It’s always a pleasure to race against the world’s best drivers and I’ve had some strong results down the years,” Ekstrom said. “What helps me is that I’ve been lucky to race many good touring cars, sportscars and rally cars but everyone knows it is a unique event.

“You have two minutes to show what you can do, and if you do it spotlessly you go further. I once won a race by a thousandth of a second: with margins like that you also need luck.”

This year’s RoC takes place in the Bangkok Rajamangala Stadium on Dec.14-15. Other drivers confirmed for the event include Schumacher, Tom Kristensen and World Rally Champion Sebastien Ogier.
