Formula 1 and college football might not seem obvious competitors, but in football-obsessed Texas, it was enough of an issue that the Circuit of The Americas tried to change the date of its second annual United States Grand Prix from Nov. 15-17 to avoid a conflict with the Big 12 match-up between the University of Texas Longhorns and the Oklahoma State University Cowboys set for Saturday, Nov. 16 at 2:30 p.m. local time. When getting a new date out of F1’s powers-that-be proved impractical, however, the track got creative to give local sports fans every opportunity to take in both events.
Single-day tickets for the F1 USGP can be purchased Friday (Nov. 15), Saturday (Nov. 16) and Sunday (Nov. 17) at the COTA Grand Plaza Ticket Office at the circuit. Daily general admission tickets start at $49 for Friday’s practice sessions. The timing of the UT-OSU football game on Saturday will give football fans time to check out the Formula 1 qualifying sessions at COTA, which wraps up at 1 p.m. CT on Saturday, before heading downtown to Darrell K Royal”Texas Memorial Stadium for the game.
After the races ” and the game ” fans are invited to the biggest street party of the year in Central Texas, as Austin Fan Fest fueled by Shell kicks into high gear. Sports enthusiasts can enjoy 12 square blocks of interactive fun, games and rides, plus six live music stages, and it’s all free. The festival kicks off Thursday, Nov. 14, and runs from noon to midnight Friday, Nov. 15, and Saturday, Nov. 16, and noon to 8 p.m. on Sunday.
?Nov. 15-17 is going to be a great weekend to be in Austin, Texas, with world-class racing and entertainment and one of the hottest pairings in college football on display for eager fans,? COTA spokeswoman Julie Loignon said. ?COTA’s single-day ticket options for the Formula 1 United States Grand Prix make it easy for fans to customize their experience and sample all of the great activities planned for Grand Prix weekend, including Austin Fan Fest fueled by Shell, which is the place to end your day no matter where it begins!?
