Sebastian Vettel begins the Singapore Grand Prix weekend as the overwhelming favourite to win according to players of the Castrol EDGE Grand Prix Predictor, with more than 52 per cent believing he will triumph.
The world championship leader has won three of the last four races, and has been utterly dominant since Formula 1 returned from its summer hiatus with back-to-back victories in Belgium and Italy.
That said, Singapore’s street circuit presents fresh challenges after the fast blasts of the previous two tracks and while Red Bull has a good track record in the night race, both Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton have also performed well there in the past.
The Spaniard is second favourite at the moment, with 24 per cent of the vote, while Hamilton has 10 per cent.
GPP expert Karun Chandhok believes this is the perfect opportunity for Hamilton to strike and match his team-mate Nico Rosberg’s tally of two wins for Mercedes in 2013.
“Singapore is going to be all about qualifying, track position and getting the tyres to last so you get the optimum strategy to work,” said Chandhok. “Lewis Hamilton has always gone well on street circuits and Singapore is no different.
“The Mercedes should be strong here with the higher downforce requirements like it was in Monaco although since then, the RBR cars have made big progress.”
