Marc Marquez insists Jorge Lorenzo is still favourite for victory in the British Grand Prix despite beating the Yamaha rider to pole in a record-setting MotoGP qualifying session.

Marquez decimated Casey Stoner’s 2011 lap record when he fired in a 2m00.691s, and in the process eclipsed what Lorenzo billed one of the “best laps of my entire career.” Despite that however the 20-year-old believes Lorenzo is still in prime position for victory, particularly given the breathtaking speed and consistency of the latter’s practice four run.

Lorenzo never dipped outside the 2m02s bracket during an unbroken 13-lap run in the final practice session. Marquez in contrast never managed to string together more than one lap at the same pace.

“Lorenzo is the favourite for tomorrow,” Marquez said. “He did a very good FP4, it was so good. It looks like he has a better pace; I think he’s the strongest guy.

“We are trying some things and that is good, and then tomorrow in the warm-up we can [make] adjustments. I think we have a good pace for tomorrow, and I am happy with my bike and my setup.”
