Former grand prix driver Christian Klien has joined the Swiss Morand Racing LMP2 team for the remainder of the European Le Mans Series.

The Austrian, who raced at the Le Mans 24 Hours with the factory Peugeot team in 2008 and ’09, will race Morand’s Morgan-Judd/BMW LMP2 with Switzerland’s Natacha Gachnang (with Klien, ABOVE) at the Hungaroring and Paul Ricard ELMS rounds in September.

Klien takes the place of Frenchman Franck Mailleux, who has been unable to raise the funds to complete the season with the team.

Team boss Benoit Morand said: “We had to take the painful decision to find a new driver for the end of the season. I had a shortlist of professional drivers who were available and who could finish the season with us. The name of Christian came back many times and we decided to test him during a two-day test at Snetterton [last Wednesday and Thursday].

“His feedback with our engineer, together with his feeling for the car in rainy and dry conditions, confirmed to us that our decision was the right one.”

The test, attended by Morand on behalf of OAK/Morgan, Murphy Prototypes and Greaves Motorsport, was organized by Dunlop to evaluate tires for 2014.

Gachnang and Mailleux lie sixth in the ELMS points after third-place finishes at rounds two and three at Imola and Spielberg, respectively.
