Rosberg: Mercedes not yet in title hunt

Nico Rosberg believes Mercedes still needs to improve its consistency before it can believe it is ready to challenge for the title.

Although teammate Lewis Hamilton’s dominant victory in Hungary before the summer break has left the team in firm contention for the title, Rosberg sees the need for improvement.

“We have learned a lot from our mistakes and the issues we have had, and the end of last year was particularly bad, but we still have some way to go,” explained the German, who has won two races this year. We are not where we wanted to be, and we are still lacking some consistency.

“Two races ago was the Nurburgring and we were very slow in the race. So we are still lacking consistency and that is what we are pushing for.”

When asked what the team needs to do to achieve that target, Rosberg said: “It is understanding even better how the tires work in different circumstances different temperatures and different tracks. It is really all down to understanding.”

Rosberg’s own title hopes appear slim, because he is 88 points behind leader Sebastian Vettel, and he has admitted that his target right now is simply to add more victories this season.

“I am just thinking race by race,” he said. “That is the best way to do it at the moment just take it as it comes and try to get a fantastic result at each race. That is what I am focused on at the moment.”
