Report: Montoya out at Ganassi NASCAR team at season's end

By

Multiple news sources are reporting that Juan Pablo Montoya was informed earlier this week that he would not be back with the Earnhardt Ganassi Racing Sprint Cup squad after this season.

Fox Sports and NASCAR.com both report that Montoya, who has raced with with Chip Ganassi’s NASCAR squad since quitting Formula 1 for NASCAR after the 2006 season, will not return to the No. 42 Sprint Cup entry car next year. The team has declined to comment on the reports.

Montoya, 37 has two wins in 239 Sprint Cup starts, both of them on road courses at Sonoma in 2007 and Watkins Glen in 2010 although he has contended for wins on ovals on several occasions, especially at Indianapolis, where he won the Indy 500 with Ganassi in 2000. Montoya is currently ranked 22nd in the Sprint Cup point standings the same ranking with which he finished last season with just three top-five finishes thus far this season.

Montoya, 37, scored seven grand prix victories in F1, following his meteoric rise in American open-wheel racing with Target Chip Ganassi Racing, which saw him win the 1999 Champ Car title and Indy the following year in an IRL one-off.
