Report: Castroneves avoids serious injury in Brazil stock car crash

By

IZOD IndyCar Series points leader Helio Castroneves sustained minor injuries after crashing during practice for a stock car race in Brazil on Friday, the Associated Press reports. The AP says Castroneves sustained cuts on his legs and had neck and back pain after the crash Friday in Ribeirao Preto.

“Thanks for the support,” Castroneves posted on Twitter. “The pain killers make me feel good. The good news I didn’t break anything.”

Castroneves’ spokesman, Americo Teixeira, told the AP that the injuries were not serious and that Castroneves planned to compete in Sunday’s race, pending clearance from doctors would not be given until more tests were conducted on his neck and back.

Castroneves has a 31-point lead in the IndyCar championship chase over Scott Dixon heading into the Aug. 25 race at Sonoma.
