Motor racing likes to talk about technology transfer. From the racetrack to Main Street, there are a litany of examples demonstrating how pioneering innovations tried and tested from Indy to Le Mans to Monaco are now common place not just on the supercar level but down to the cars that ordinary people use to make ordinary commutes every day.Occasionally, the technology transfer occurs outside of the automotive realm.

In the video below appearing on Ted.com , Peter van Manen, Managing Director of McLaren Electronics, talks about how the same systems that Jenson Button and Sergio Perez used at last weekend’s Hungarian Grand Prix are also being employed at Birmingham Children’s Hospital in the U.K. to help pediatricians identify and get ahead of potentially life-ending events in their neo-natal intensive care units. -George Tamayo
