Classic Car Week set to take hold of downtown Monterey

The heart of downtown Monterey, Calif., will be transformed into an outdoor motorsports museum when more than 20 historic racecars line Alvarado Street to help kickoff the 2013 Classic Car Week festivities. The racecar show is free to all attendees and will be held on Friday, Aug. 9 from 5-7 p.m. This event marks the start of an exhilarating week on California’s central coast and allows visitors to gain an up-close look at the weekend’s biggest automotive stars. In addition to its motorsports attractions, the race car show will also feature fantastic raffle prizes and music.

The show features a select group of classic race cars that will participate in one of the week’s cornerstone events, the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. Under police escort, this band of celebrated vehicles will travel from the race track, down Highway 68 and finish their journey in beautiful Old Monterey where they will be on display for the downtown community.

This year’s racecar show will feature various Corvettes parked alongside other automotive classics. Some highlights include: 1954 Porsche 356 Pre A, 1965 Lister Maserati and a 1937 Jaguar SS100.

Part competition and part pageantry, racing history comes to life as cars from nearly every era grace Mazda Raceway from Aug 16-18 at the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion. This event features 550 historic racecars which provide fans with three-day’s worth of race entertainment.

The cars, which are selected for their historical significance, authenticity and period-correctness, are divided into 16 classes, based on type of car, displacement and era of origin. In commemoration of its 60th anniversary this year’s marque will be the classic, American sports car the Chevrolet Corvette.
