British sports car regular Johnny Mowlem will return to the American Le Mans Series with Dyson Racing at the end of the season.
Mowlem, who contested two races with the team last year, will race Dyson’s Lola-Mazda B12/60 in the penultimate round of the series at the Virginia International Raceway on Oct. 5. It is also possible that he could remain with the team for the 1000-mile Petit Le Mans series finale two weeks later.
Mowlem, who did the Laguna Seca and VIR mini-enduros last year, will share the car with team regular Guy Smith while team boss Chris Dyson is absent for family reasons.
Dyson said: “We had a great test with Johnny a couple of weeks back at Road Atlanta and he was straight on the pace and gave great technical feedback.
“It was like he’d never been away, and I’d always told him we’d have him back if the opportunity arose. Johnny will be with us for VIR and I guess we could call him first reserve for Petit.”
Mowlem, who is leading the European Le Mans Series GTE points with the Ram Racing Ferrari squad this year, said: “It is fantastic to be back with the team, back in a prototype and back in the ALMS, which has been so important in my career. Dyson isn’t thinking about the championship, so it will be good to out there and go all out to try to beat the Muscle Milk HPD [which has won the past three ALMS rounds].”
Dyson is also expected to bolster the LMP1 field in the ALMS with a second car for five of the remaining six rounds, starting at Mosport next month. It is understood that the car will be driven by Tony Burgess, who contested three rounds with the team last year, and Chris McMurry, who did one.
When he starts at VIR Mowlem will have contested at least one race in every year of the American Le Mans Series, which merges with Grand-Am to become United SportsCar Racing for 2014. The Brit took part in the very first ALMS race, the 1999 Sebring 12 Hours, with the Reiser Callas Porsche team.
