Six IndyCar drivers get grid penalties

A poor showing in qualifying by Honda-powered teams has led to a switch to new-spec engines and 10-spot penalties for most of its entries in Sunday’s Pocono 400.
Four Honda drivers — Scott Dixon, Simon Pagenaud, Takuma Sato and Tristan Vautier — made the switch after Thursday’s official test at Pocono, trading in the high-mileage engines they’d used during practice and qualifying at the Indianapolis 500 for an improved specification that was recently tested at Mid-Ohio.
Using that spec, Dixon, Pagenaud, Sato and Vautier were the four fastest Honda drivers in qualifying, with Dixon’s 219.500 mph average significantly better than that of teammate Charlie Kimball who posted a 218.345 with the older spec.
It wasn’t long before the belly lockers on the Honda Performance Development support trailer were emptied as more Honda runners requested the latest 2.2-liter single-turbo V6 powerplants to use in the 160-lap race around the 2.5-mile oval.
Only Ganassi’s Kimball, the pair of Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing entries for Graham Rahal and James Jakes and Sarah Fisher Hartman Racing’s Josef Newgarden opted to stay with the older motors and run them to full mileage in today’s race.
Dixon, the top Honda qualifier in seventh, received a 10-spot penalty for changing his engine without being close enough to the minimum mileage limit between rebuilds–the same thing the other Honda-powered teams did willfully after qualifying–but the penalty was a result of a misunderstanding between the team and the series on when the team could replace its worn Indy-spec motor.
The revised grid is as follows:
