SUPERCARS: Whincup reaches milestone 100th win

Jamie Whincup became only the second driver in the history of Australia's Supercar championship to reach 100 wins in the series with victory in Sunday's Sydney Motorsports Park race.

The six-time series champion had been on the cusp of the achievement since his win in the Townsville opener in June, but had been denied by Triple Eight Holden teammates Shane van Gisbergen and Craig Lowndes in a number of close finishes since then.

After narrowly coming off second best to van Gisbergen in Saturday's opener at the track formerly known as Eastern Creek, Whincup secured victory in the longer second race by jumping Lowndes in the second pit stops and then edging away.

Lowndes – who was making a record 600th race start in the championship on Sunday – is the only other man in the series' history to have achieved 100 wins, with his tally currently standing at 106.

While Lowndes has been winning in the series since 1996, Whincup has notched up his century of victories in just a decade, his first triumph having come in Adelaide in 2006.

Although Sunday's win was only his third of the 2016 season, he continues to lead the championship ahead of van Gisbergen, who finished fifth in race two after a late tangle with James Moffat.
